Position Title: Student Projectionist
Position Type: Part Time 10-month Academic Fall & Spring yearly Graduate Assistantship contract

Indiana University Cinema is a renowned curatorial program and arthouse movie theater dedicated to using film and cinema studies for intellectual emancipation and cultural edification. As an academic unit on IU Bloomington’s campus, the Cinema advances cultural and scholastic excellence in myriad forms, including but
not limited to, film series; visiting filmmaker and other industry professionals, offering students unparalleled access to some of the most influential global artists; conferences and symposia; original intellectual production; student-film showcases, internships, mentorship, and practical industry experiences; and community engagement programs.


IU Cinema is a leading participant in the life and culture of Indiana University. With more than 200 programs per year that include a unique, innovative, and expansive mix of visiting industry professionals; screenings with live music; academic and community partnerships; enhancements to the use, scholarship, and research associated with the Indiana University film collections and other archives around the world; and special retrospectives and programs, IU Cinema is a benchmark for other cinema programs aspire to.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Student Projectionists work under the direct supervision of IU Cinema’s Cinema Technology Manager and operate as part of a team to present digital cinema screenings. Projectionists also provide the technical support required for live events, classes, lectures, and other public events. Prior technical knowledge or experience is not required; training for all operations will be provided. This position includes 100% Fee remission and reports to the Assistant Director of Cinema Technology.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital cinema exhibition
• Projection of digital films for public audiences which includes inspecting and monitoring picture and sound quality, confirming correct automation programming, and monitoring post-screening Q&A sessions.

Cinema program content show build and quality control
• Inspect and prepare digital cinema and HD video content in-person screenings
• Watch film programming specifically monitoring for audio-visual sync and other issues


Live Event technical assistance
• Set-up, testing, and operation of audio-visual equipment as well as assistance with load in and break down of live events


Classes and Lecture Technical support
• Lectern set-up and technical assistance with presenters


Remote guest and livestream event production technical support
• Equipment set-up and technical assistance with presenters

General cinema booth maintenance as well as other part-time staff duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Candidates must be prepared to commit to a 15-hour appointment for both Fall and Spring semesters and, if offered, confirm interest in and ability to commit to 2-years
• Applicant’s academic commitments must allow regular weekly IU Cinema shifts including daytime, evening,and weekend hours
• Good vision (including color discernment) and hearing is required to maintain optimal image and sound presentation quality (if required, prescriptions for corrective eyewear must be kept up to date)
• Commitment to using cinema to create tangible, material outcomes in the service of purposefully cultivating transformative educational, cultural, and community work that benefits all peoples.
• New hires must be available in Bloomington to attend and successfully complete a mandatory training period during the month of August, prior to First Day of Classes (paid on hourly basis)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Keen attention to details in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
• Able to solve problems and remain calm under pressure
• Independently prioritize work tasks and manage projects
• Work flexibly as an integral part of IU Cinema’s Production team
• Excellent communication skills with an ability to deal effectively with people at all levels
• Familiarity with both Macintosh and Windows systems


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of film and enthusiasm toward advancing the mission of not-for-profit education-based film organization
• Familiarity with Zoom platform to facilitate training in Tech support with Zoom guests
• Video editing experience.
• Live music and live event production experience
• Interest in additional hourly work beyond 15-hour contract for intermittent rental programs

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • GA Projectionists work mainly in a temperature regulated booth control room and in the Cinema itself.
  • Assigned tasks require frequent movement between floor levels, accessed by stairs or elevator.
  • Tech operating stations and booth portal windows require standing and moving in tight spaces.
