Programming and Operations Assistant, Graduate Assistant (Position Filled)

Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs

Primary Role:

Under limited supervision, the Graduate Assistant position performs a variety of tasks related to the successful completion of the daily duties for Marcellus Neal and Frances Marshall Black Culture Center. Graduate Assistant is responsible for providing administrative, programming, supervisory, and other assistance to the director. Experience with project development and management, technology and creating and managing databases is needed. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the applicant, he/she may also have additional project assignments.

Academic Year:  2021-2022, 10-month academic appointment

Weekly hours:   20 hours per week, 50% of Full Time Equivalent

Graduate assistant may have some flexibility with work hours, taking care of most duties Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Graduate assistant will be expected to staff evening and weekend events during the week.

Compensation:  $18,000 stipend disbursed in 10 monthly payments. a 30-credit hour fee remission with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours during the summer, and health insurance coverage from August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2022.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Administrative 

  • Assist in supervising undergraduate staff of NMBCC
  • Assist with special programs in evenings and weekends as needed
  • Open and staff NMBCC when director or full-time staff is unable to do so
  • Serve as a liaison to the Black student organizations
  • Serve as a resource and support for Black students and Black student organizations
  • Assist the director and full-time staff person as needed

Programming 

  • Develop ideas for potential programs and initiatives
  • Oversee the planning and facilitation of monthly Black student leaders’ meetings
  • Assist in planning and executing NMBCC programs and workshops
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers for NMBCC programs
  • Work collaboratively with other IU Culture Centers and DEMA Departments
  • Contact potential co-sponsors for programs in consultation with director
  • Staff events at the center and off-site

Publicity  

  • Maintain contact list of campus and community resources for Black students
  • Monitor and maintain social media engagement on various platforms 
  • Assist in maintaining list service mass mailing lists 
  • Assist with news releases, emails, and flyers for NMBCC programs 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, work well in a close team environment, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Education: Must be accepted at Indiana University Bloomington in a graduate program with a minimum of 6 credit hours.

Minimum Experience: Candidate must possess event planning and administrative experience including collaborating with university, student organizations and community groups; have familiarity with Black culture; and knowledge of common office applications (including Microsoft Word and Excel as well as social networking applications).

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Be familiar with Black culture
  • Self-motivated and work well in a close team environment
  • Possess event planning and administrative experience including collaborating with university, student organizations and community groups
  • General understanding of cross-cultural intersectionality and fully prepared to engage a culturally diverse community
  • Knowledge of common office applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel as well as social networking applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to commit to working scheduled hours. Regular attendance is a condition of employment. 

Expectations:

The Graduate Assistant must be a Bloomington campus student and may not concurrently hold a position as Associate Instructor, Graduate Assistant, or Research Assistant, nor be committed to other full-time work. The employee will be expected to work evening hours and work weekend events as needed.
