Overview:
The Indiana University Cinema is a world-class venue and curatorial program that is dedicated to the scholarly study and highest standards of exhibition of film in its traditional and modern forms. Our Student Projectionists gain work experience operating state of the art audio and video equipment, presenting on-site at IU Cinema, as well as for outdoor and virtual screenings.
Such an opportunity directly complements academic studies in film history, theory, and media production. Attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and proven ability to work as part of a team are the foremost requirements for this position. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Successful completion of our training in the exhibition of digital cinema and virtual screening event production as well as technical support required for live events, classes and lectures
- Perform all necessary duties required, including:
- Set up and operation of cinema systems for on-site, outdoor, and virtual public screenings and lectures
- Lectern set up and technical support for classes held in IU Cinema
Inspect and prepare digital cinema and HD video content for in-person and virtual screenings - Additional technical support tasks, including:
• Live music events
• Video editing of virtual screenings with Adobe Premiere (training provided)
• General cinema booth maintenance and cleaning as well as other part-time staff duties assigned - If above requirements are met and aptitude is demonstrated, training may be offered in 16mm and 35mm film handling and projection
Qualifications:
- Interest in and ability to commit to 2-years, if offered
- Ability to work flexibly as an integral part of IU Cinema’s Production team
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to deal effectively with people at all levels
- Keen attention to detail, reliability, and an ability to multi-task in a busy environment
- Ability to work independently to solve problems and remain calm under pressure
- Ability to work with (and provide basic tech support for) both Macintosh and Windows systems

Requirements for all applicants (Student Hourly and/or Graduate Assistant):
- Must be able to commit to work regular IU Cinema shifts which include daytime, evening and weekend hours (to be coordinated with student’s academic schedule)
- New hires must attend and successfully complete a mandatory training period during the month of August.
- Good vision (including color discernment) and hearing is required in order to maintain optimal image and sound presentation quality (if required, prescriptions for corrective eyewear must be kept up to date)
- Opportunity exists for training in 16mm and 35mm projection: Candidates qualifying for training in film projection need to be able to lift 10lbs above their head and have the ability to reach both overhead and down to floor level in a confined space.
- This is primarily an in-person, face-to-face position. IU Cinema staff are required to meet all public health and safety guidelines. (training provided)
Additional Requirements for Graduate Assistant applicants:
- If selected, candidates must be prepared to commit to a 15-hour appointment for both semesters
- IU Cinema GA Projectionist positions are 10-month Student Academic Appointments
- IU Cinema SAA’s will not be revised (e.g. hours changed or reduced) to accommodate additional appointments.
- Upon successful completion of a 10-month appointment and based on performance and adherence to requirements, IU Cinema may offer the position for a second Academic year. GA applicants should indicate in their cover letter whether a 2nd year would be possible
- Combined student employment in excess of 20 hours requires written approval from Faculty Advisor and, ultimately, the Vice-Provost. Combined positions/appointments at the University shall not exceed the absolute maximum of 30-hours weekly.
- International students: If you are an IU Bloomington student, you can work on campus without prior authorization. However, there are restrictions. Visit the F-1 Employment section for more information. If you are a J-1 student, you are required to have authorization for any type of employment that you wish to undertake. To remain in status, it is extremely important that you follow the federal regulations about employment. All international students are limited to 20 hours a week during the school year. If you have multiple work positions with IU, the total amount of hours you may work are 20 hours a week for all IU jobs on campus. During Thanksgiving, winter, spring, and summer breaks you can work more than 20 hours.
Compensation:
15-hour SAA (37.5% FTE) ........................ $4,875 per semester
Hourly .................................................... $19.00/hourly beyond FTE
Hourly .................................................... $16.00/hourly for training dates August 9th to 20th.
NO Fee Remission ............................... This position DOES NOT include fee remission.
Students eligible for G901 are preferred.
Start Date for 15-hour/week GA Contract: August 22nd, 2021
In addition, there will be a mandatory training period during the month of August. Shifts follow a mostly regular weekly schedule, beginning with the first week of fall semester. Schedule variations should be expected. However, most variations will be known at the start of each semester.
