Title: Graduate Assistant for Financial Wellness Engagement

Remuneration: $22,000 academic year/20 hours a week

Beginning Fall 2022 the position will have a .50% FTE (i.e. 20 hours per
week) for the academic year and be eligible for student health insurance. A fee
remission is available as part of the package. Priority for this position will be
given to those early in their academic program as the ideal candidate will be
able to work with office for more than one semester. Preference will also be
given to those who would be able to work part-time during the summer.
The Office of Financial Wellness & Education serves students across all IU
campuses to help them make informed financial decisions and provide
resources to help them overcome financial barriers to college completion.
When the program first was established, the focus was on reducing student
loan debt. Over the last few years, the Office has placed more emphasis on
ensuring the education provided helps reduce financial stress. The Office offers
a comprehensive suite of free services available to all students through its
MoneySmarts program, including:
• Confidential one-on-one appointments
• Presentations for any class, student organization, or other universityaffiliated
program
• Online financial education resources such as MoneySmarts U,
CashCourse, MoneySmarts.iu.edu
In addition to the MoneySmarts program the Office also runs the Higher
Education Financial Wellness Alliance (HEFWA). This national organization is
focused on helping higher education institutions across the country in their
efforts to provide financial wellness services to their students. HEFWA owns
and operates the CashCourse financial education platform, which is currently
available to students at 400 different institutions across the country. HEFWA
also runs an annual Summit, which is attended by individuals from institutions
across the country. The 2023 Summit will be held at the University of Oregon
from July 16-18, 2023.
The Office also helps coordinate a college savings initiative focused on
promoting the benefits of 529 plans (529.iu.edu). Much of the outreach for the
initiative is to faculty and staff at Indiana University to encourage them to better
financially prepare for if they, or a loved one, decide to attend college. The
program has resulted in employee direct deposit contributions increasing from
$103,000 in 2018 to $498,000 in 2021.
Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Graduate Assistant for Financial Wellness
Engagement include, but are not limited to:
• Developing financial wellness content through various mediums,
designed to reach students across all IU campuses
• Assessing financial wellness needs among different student
demographics
• Coordinating a marketing and content strategy that reaches students at
critical financial decision-making points
• Collaborating with other campus units/departments to development
partnerships that lead to increased office traffic
• Representing the Office at various events across the University to
promote its services
• Reviewing and editing current and new financial wellness content to
ensure that it aligns with the Office’s mission
The Graduate Assistant will participate in various stages of the development,
delivery, and assessment of services facilitated by the Center. As the preferred
candidate will be able to work for the office during Summer 2023, the Graduate
Assistant will also be required to attend the Higher Education Financial
Wellness Summit in the summer of 2023. Other responsibilities may include
program evaluation, daily office operations, and participating in the hiring of any
new full and/or part-time staff.
Qualifications
Preferred applicants must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program at
Indiana University and must have a strong interest in and experience with
learning design, community engagement, and marketing. While the ideal
candidate will have some financial knowledge, it is not a requirement. The
position requires knowledge of Adobe Suite programs (e.g. Illustrator,
Photoshop, InDesign, Audition, Premiere), common office applications
(Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) as well as social networking services.
Applicant must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be well
organized, and be able to work with competing tasks. Applicant should have
experience in project management, public speaking, and leadership. A strong
interest in student wellness is especially important.
Schedule
The position is available for the Spring 2023 semester, but can be extended
into the 2023-2024 academic year. In addition, there is opportunity for
employment during Summer 2023 that would be funded outside of the listed
stipend. Graduate Assistant is expected to work 20 hours a week and must be
eligible for a Student Academic Appointment.
