African American Arts Institute (AAAI) UA-MRKT

Primary Role: 

The African American Dance Company (AADC) is a performance course (A100 and A338) offered through the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies (AAADS) and managed by the African American Arts Institute (AAAI). The Company studies and performs movement traditions of the African diaspora and African American Culture. The Company’s repertoire includes African dance styles, contemporary, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and various cultural forms.

The Associate Instructor assists the AADC director with instruction, choreography, classroom management, and fulfills administrative duties related to the Company’s function and the AAAI’s mission.

Academic Year:  2021-2022, 10-month academic appointment

Weekly hours 20 hours per week, 50% of Full-Time Equivalent

The ensemble class meets on Tuesday’s and Thursdays, 4:15pm to 7:15pm. Schedules may change each semester. The Associate Instructor is required to attend all auditions, class sessions, rehearsals, performances, meetings and other required events, some of which are scheduled on evenings and weekends, within and outside of Bloomington. A schedule of required events is shared at the beginning of each semester. At the ensemble director’s discretion, the Associate Instructor must hold regular office hours, and work flexible hours on performance and course related materials.

Compensation:  $18,000 stipend disbursed in 10 monthly payments, a 30-credit hour fee remission with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours during the summer, and health insurance coverage from August 1, 2022 through July 31, 2021.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist the ensemble director with
    1. Course planning and development of material for instruction and performances.
    2. Auditions, Dance Workshop, and annual performances.
    3. Communicating, scheduling, record keeping, and grading of students.
    4. Planning, budgets, and other administrative activity.
    5. Preparing and presenting lecture demonstrations.
  • Supervise class, rehearsals, and other activities in the absence of ensemble director.
  • Plan and lead warm-ups for performances.
  • Assist with individual and small group tutorials as necessary.
  • Perform as a dancer as deemed necessary by the ensemble director.
  • Create and/or teach choreography as assigned by the ensemble director.
  • Attend staff meetings, orientation, planning and training sessions, rehearsals, and performances as assigned.
  • Fulfill other tasks as deemed necessary by the ensemble director and executive director.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Must be accepted at Indiana University Bloomington in a graduate program with a minimum of 6 credit hours Minimum Experience: 

  • Two years of dance experience at the collegiate or professional level
  • One year teaching/directing an ensemble, or serving in other ensemble leadership roles

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Enrollment and good standing as a fulltime student in a graduate degree program at IU - Bloomington
  • Formal training in Black dance traditions
  • Knowledge of dance traditions of the African diaspora
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of Black performance styles
  • Demonstrated excellence as a teacher and performer
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Facility is using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Be an organized, motivated, self-starter.

Expectations:

The Associate instructor must:

  • Attend staff meetings, orientation and training sessions, rehearsals, and performances as assigned
  • Maintain office hours as required by the director
  • Maintain a reasonably flexible schedule to attend all company-related meetings, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Be prompt and present at all job-related events and meetings
  • Take responsibility for security and care of university equipment and facilities assigned for your use
  • Adhere to AAAI policies and procedures, policies and procedures outlined in the IU Handbook for Student Academic Appointees and other IU publications governing students, faculty, and staff.
