Primary Role:
Under limited supervision, the Programming and Administrative Assistant performs a variety of non-routine tasks related to the successful completion of the daily duties for the Asian Culture Center. This position assists with student outreach programs, provides administrative and programming assistance including discussion series such as "Who are Asian American and Pacific Islanders?” and “Over a Cup of Tea,”. This position will assist in the publication of our Rice Paper newsletter; maintain/update our social networks (FB and Twitter accounts); and participate in data tracking and statistical reporting. In addition, this position serves as the primary receptionist during some evening office hours.
Academic Year: 2020-2021, 10-month academic appointment
Weekly hours: 20 hours per week, 50% Full Time, Monday through Friday including some weekend and evening hours.
Compensation: $10,000 stipend disbursed in 10 monthly payments, a 30 credit hour fee remission with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours during the summer, and health insurance coverage from August 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Serve as a liaison, resource, and support to IUB Asian and Asian American students and student organizations
- Monitor, assess, and evaluate program effectiveness
- Create weekly newsletters, bi-annual newsletter, Rice Paper, and manage social networks
- Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and community
- Organize, plan, and moderate discussion events
- Staff the ACC in evenings and as needed
- Assist with administration of special programs in evenings and on weekends as needed
- Other duties assigned based on need and current projects
Qualifications:
Must qualify for Federal Graduate Work Study funding, as determined by the Bloomington Office of Student Financial Assistance (BOSFA). Must fill out a FAFSA form for BOSFA to determine if the student qualifies for Work Study Funding.
Minimum Education: Actively enrolled and in good standing as a fulltime student in a graduate degree program at Indiana University-Bloomington
Minimum Experience: One year of demonstrated previous work in education, programming, event planning, and community outreach
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Experience and awareness of Asian and Asian American culture and history
- Knowledge of computers and database/spreadsheet/ word processing/desktop publishing software
- Excellent communication and project leadership skills
- Ability to work with a wide range of people
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
About the Asian Culture Center:
The Asian Culture Center (ACC) at Indiana University was established in 1998 and is under the umbrella of the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs. Based on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University, the Asian Culture Center aims to promote awareness, understanding, and acceptance of Asian and Asian American cultures, history, and issues as an integral part of the fabric of American life in the United States. The Asian Culture Center accomplishes this through advocacy, institutional resources, cultural and educational support, and community outreach activities that support participation in and dialogue from students, faculty, staff, and residents of Indiana.
Expectations:
The Graduate Assistant must be a Bloomington campus student and may not concurrently hold a position as Associate Instructor, Graduate Assistant, or Research Assistant, nor be committed to other full time or part time work. The employee will be expected to work evening hours and work weekend events as needed.
