LGBTQ+ Graduate Assistant Work-Study (Position Filled)

Primary Role: 

The primary role of the Graduate Assistant, LGBTQ+ Culture Center includes advising student groups, developing outreach programs and representing the office at campus/community meetings and resource fairs

Academic Year:  2020-2021, 10-month academic appointment

Weekly hours:   20 hours per week, 50% of Full Time Equivalent

Flexible hours 8am-5pm Monday-Friday, evenings and weekends as projects unfold

Compensation:  $10,000 stipend disbursed in 10 monthly payments, a 30 credit hour fee remission with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours during the summer, and health insurance coverage from August 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with student groups, providing facilitator training and monthly information sessions for all LGBTQ+ groups associated with the LGBTQ+ Center
  • Initiate new advocacy/support groups as interest in expressed
  • Develop a monthly Queer speaker series
  • Assist office staff with Ally training for faculty/staff as requested
  • Represent office at various resource fairs
  • Attend at least one meeting of the LGBTQ+ Alumni Association
  • Participate in periodic classes involving LGBTQ+ perspectives
  • Attend Advisory Board meetings and collaborate with Board members in taking on new outreach opportunities
  • Assist Office Director as special projects/program arise 

Qualifications:

Must qualify for Federal Graduate Work-Study funding, as determined by the Bloomington Office of Student Financial Assistance (BOSFA). Must fill out a FAFSA form for BOSFA to determine if the student qualifies for Work-Study funding

Minimum Education:

Fulltime IUB graduate student with graduate work study eligibility

Minimum Experience:  Two years of experience in diversity, social justice, and/or LGBTQ+ support services. Prefer experience in facilitating small groups, event planning, and/or public relations. 

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Proficient in use of technology including databases, spreadsheets, word processing, and presentation software
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently (self-motivated) and as a member of a team

Expectations:

The Graduate Assistant must be a Bloomington campus student and may not concurrently hold a position as Associate Instructor, Graduate Assistant, or Research Assistant, nor be committed to other full time or part time work. The employee will be expected to work evening hours and work weekend events as needed.

Graduate student applicants must qualify for Federal Student Aid.  Applicants must complete and submit a 2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form which can be found at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. The deadline to submit the FAFSA form for Indiana is April 15, 2020 as a received date or as soon as possible, please. FAFSA forms submitted and received after April 15 may have a delay in eligibility determination. After July 1, 2020, the IU Bloomington Office of Student Financial Assistance (IUBOSFA) will advise the unit vacant position supervisor of the applicant’s eligibility assessment results. Applicantsshouldnot submit their confidential FAFSA reports to the supervisor.
