Position: Student Projectionist (Temporary Hourly Employee - 10 hours per week)

Overview:
The Indiana University Cinema is a world-class venue and curatorial program that is dedicated to the scholarly study and highest standards of exhibition of film in its traditional and modern forms.
Our Student Projectionists gain rare work experience operating some of the world’s finest projection equipment, handling a variety of film & video formats, and presenting under optimal screening conditions.
Attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and willingness to learn are the foremost requirements for this position. Such an opportunity directly complements academic studies in film history, theory, criticism, and production. However, interested students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Successfully complete our detailed training in the exhibition of 35mm, and DCI Compliant digital cinema and alternative content;
- Perform all necessary duties required, including:
- Set up and operation of cinema system for public screenings and lectures.
- Set up of Teaching Lectern for classes.
- Execute necessary adjustments for format and aspect ratio changes;
- Execute “reel to reel” changeovers (for film screenings);
- Exhibit all films and videos, maintaining the highest standards of exhibition;
- Inspect and prepare video tapes, discs and packages for screenings;
- Prepare screened materials (film/video) for return shipment;
- Occasionally: Close/lock the venue at the end of a shift when all patrons have left.
Qualifications:
- Keen attention to detail, reliability, excellent time-keeping skills, punctuality, independence, motivation and ability to multi-task in a busy environment;
- Strong practical and organizational skills with the ability to solve problems;
- Enthusiastic and pleasant manner;
- Ability to work flexibly within a small team;
- Ability to work independently, and remain calm under pressure;
- Ability to work with (and provide basic tech support for) both Macintosh and Windows systems.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with people at all levels, even under pressure.
- An aptitude for learning technical skills, and experience with audiovisual technology is desired, but prior experience with theatrical projection is not required. We provide full training.
- Interest in film history, technologies, and presentation aesthetics.
- Interest in 2-year commitment preferred. Potential for 15-hour GA contract if one becomes available.
Requirements for all applicants:
- Must be able to commit to work daytime, evening and/or weekend hours to correspond with IU Cinema’s screening and student’s schedule.
- New hires must attend and successfully complete a mandatory training period during the month of August.
- Good vision is also required in order to thread film and focus images onto a screen approximately 60-feet away. If required, prescriptions for corrective eyewear must be kept up-to-date.
- The position entails lifting of film materials weighing up to 40 lbs. Additionally, candidates must be able to lift 10 lbs above their head, which is necessary for threading standard 35mm film reels.
Compensation:
Hourly……………………………….....$16.00/hourly for training dates between August 10th and August 21st
Hourly……………………………….....$19.00/hourly after training
Start Date:
The official start date will be First day of Classes, August 24th There will be a mandatory training period during the two weeks prior to the first week of Fall classes. Assigned shifts follow a regular weekly schedule, beginning with the first week of Fall semester. Some schedule variations should be expected, however, most will be known at the start of each semester.
