Primary Role:
The mission of this Initiatives Assistant for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Initiative is to promote and enhance the academic and professional experiences of first-generation, underrepresented students in the STEM disciplines through research, structured mentoring, and academic support. The STEM Initiative was created to prepare and advance students as research scientists, research physicians, and professionals in the public health fields.
The position develops, coordinates, implements, and participates in student development efforts; represent the Groups program and/or STEM initiative at events, workshops, and programs locally and nationally; teach the summer and academic year STEM seminars; serves as advisor for the Groups STEM student organization; and assists with the management and implementation of the STEM Initiative’s functions. Participates in strategic planning, student development, and teaching and curriculum development.
Academic Year: 2020- 2021, 10 month academic appointment
Weekly hours: 20 hours per week, 50% of Full Time Equivalent
Set weekly work schedule around classes. Variable hours during special programming time.
Compensation: $10,000 stipend disbursed in 10 monthly payments, a 30 credit hour fee remission with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours during the summer, and health insurance coverage from August 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Teach STEM Seminars
- Develop and implement curriculum aimed at fostering support for students enrolled in STEM seminars during the summer and academic year.
- Actively engage students in activities that will facilitate their professional growth and development including but not limited to creating research posters, developing professional portfolios, and improving written and oral communication skills.
- Hold individual face-to-face interactions with seminar participants to gauge student progress and create individualized plans based on student’s level.
- Monitor, evaluate student progress and report any concerns to the STEM planning team as needed.
- Collaborate with other units on campus and in the community to implement activities that expose students to a broader experience in academia and STEM career fields
Groups STEM Student Organization Advisor
- Provide guidance and support for the Groups STEM student organization executive board.
- Assist the board in establishing reasonable goals for the academic year and creating a timeline in which goals and objectives are met.
- Attend all executive board meetings
- Attend all organizational meetings as schedule permits
- Update STEM planning team on progress, concerns, and needs of the board.
STEM planning Team
- Participate in weekly STEM planning team meetings
- Contribute to functions of the STEM initiative including, but not limited to program planning, marketing strategies, resource development, and program evaluation
Qualifications:
Must qualify for Federal Graduate Work-Study funding, as determined by the Bloomington Office of Student Financial Assistance (BOSFA). Must fill out a FAFSA form for BOSFA to determine if the student qualifies for Work-Study funding.
Minimum Education: Actively enrolled and in good standing as a fulltime student in a graduate degree program at Indiana University-Bloomington
Minimum Experience: At least one year experience working with or participating in a similar program.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Student should be organized, responsible, and dependable and have the ability to work independently
- Possess analytical problem solving and decision making skills
- Be able to communicate effectively with a diverse population
- Must have a strong student development background, possess strong interpersonal skills
- Possess an ability to actively engage students in the learning process
- Strong writing, editing and research skills are required
- Knowledge and proficiency of technological tools preferred
- Background in STEM discipline preferred, but not required
Expectations:
Must arrive promptly for scheduled work hours. Must be willing to sign and adhere to a confidentiality statement and follow all outlined office and university policies and guidelines. Employment is contingent upon a successful background check and federal work-study eligibility.
The Graduate Assistant must be a Bloomington campus student and may not concurrently hold a position as Associate Instructor, Graduate Assistant, or Research Assistant, nor be committed to other full time or part-time work. The employee will be expected to work evening hours and work weekend events as needed.

After July 1, 2020, the IU Bloomington Office of Student Financial Assistance (IUBOSFA) will advise the unit vacant position supervisor of the applicant’s eligibility assessment results. Applicants shouldnot submit their confidential FAFSA reports to the supervisor.
