Assistantship Title: New Student Orientation Student Success Graduate Assistant

Position Description: University Division (UD) academic advisors are responsible for advising approximately 4,000 incoming first-year students and transfer students during New Student Orientation. In addition, University Division enrolls students across all majors and actively engages students in major exploration and developing interdisciplinary plans of study. New Student Orientation Student Success Graduate Assistants will be trained to provide advising, student support, and registration assistance to incoming students during Summer 2024 New Student Orientation.
Responsibilities
· Academic advising of incoming undergraduate students, assisting students one-on-one and in small groups (generally pairs) in the creation of their first term course schedules.
· Help students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to first-term course planning.
· Provide students with accurate information about major requirements, general degree requirements, general education requirements, and academic policies and procedures.
· Evaluate students' test scores and academic records (high school and college) and recommend appropriate courses based upon that evaluation in consultation with the student.
· Teach students to navigate academic planning systems and resources.
· Maintain accurate, detailed records of orientation advising interactions and ensure the confidentiality of all academic records.
· Review guides, tools, and informational materials developed by academic advising to support New Student Orientation.
· Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications: Current enrollment in a graduate program at Indiana University Bloomington. Candidates should have strong communication and organizational skills; the ability to manage multiple responsibilities; the ability to navigate numerous online systems efficiently; experience working with students and parents in individual and group settings; experience working with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds; experience teaching students independent decision-making skills; and the ability to advise students about the nature, content, and requirements of disciplines at IU Bloomington.
Multiple assistantships available for Summer 2024
Compensation for selected candidates:
· Students with current SAA appointments in the 2023/24 academic year – Hired as GAs with a $5000 stipend divided evenly over May, June, and July.
· Students without current SAA appointments in the 2023/24 academic year – Not eligible for summer GA positions, so will be hired as hourly temporary advisors at a rate of $19.33/hr and will be paid bi-weekly.
Assistantship Duration: May 15, 2024 - July 24, 2024 (GA’s must be available for all dates listed below under “Summer Dates.”)
