Position Description: University Division (UD) academic advisors are responsible for advising approximately 5,000 incoming first-year students and transfer students during New Student Orientation. In addition, University Division enrolls students across all majors and actively engages students in major exploration and developing interdisciplinary plans of study. New Student Orientation Student Success Graduate Assistants will be trained to provide advising, student support, and registration assistance to incoming students during Summer 2023 New Student Orientation.
Responsibilities:
- Help students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to first-term course planning
- Provide students with accurate information about major requirements, general degree requirements, general education requirements, and academic policies and procedures
- Evaluate students' test scores and academic records (high school and college) and recommend appropriate courses based upon that evaluation in consultation with the student
- Teach students to navigate systems and use academic resources
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of orientation advising interactions and ensure the confidentiality of all academic records
- Review guides, tools, and informational materials developed by academic advising to support New Student Orientation
- Provide support for the orientation advising program for new students, including but not limited to preparing materials, assisting with group (pod) advising, and assisting students with registration
- Other duties, as assigned
Qualifications: Current enrollment in a graduate program at Indiana University Bloomington. Candidates should have strong communication and organizational skills; the ability to manage multiple responsibilities; the ability to navigate numerous online systems efficiently; experience working with students and parents in individual and group settings; experience working with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds; experience teaching students independent decision-making skills; and the ability to advise students about the nature, content, and requirements of disciplines at IU Bloomington.
Number of Assistantships Available for Summer 2023: Multiple
Compensation: GA’s will receive total compensation of $5000 divided evenly over May, June, and July.
Assistantship Duration: May 8, 2023 - July 20, 2023 (GA’s must be available for all dates listed below)
