Schuessler Institute for Social Research
Social Science Research Commons
Workshop in Methods
Friday, February 19th, 2:00-3:30 pm
Attention social science graduate students: Do you want to learn more about how to find funding opportunities and write a successful proposal for funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) or other agencies or foundations? If so, then you will be interested in this virtual grant writing workshop provided by the Schuessler Institute for Social Research (SISR), being made available to the Bloomington campus in collaboration with the Workshop in Methods (WIM) and the Social Science Research Commons (SSRC).
First, we are pleased to offer a recorded talk by Dr. Regina Werum, Professor of Sociology at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Werum, and IU alum, served as Program Director (Sociology) at the National Science Foundation from 2012 to 2012 and is intimately familiar with the grant writing and selection process. In “Grant Writing for Graduate Students,” Dr. Werum will show you how to start a funding portfolio, how to plan a research project, how to select funding programs, how to prepare a successful application, and more. While she is unable to visit us in person this year, Dr. Werum has recorded two 20-minute presentations for IU graduate students to watch whenever is most convenient. View the presentation at https://use.vg/R6Acip (password: Go Big Red); the accompanying PowerPoint slides are also available for download at https://go.iu.edu/3yfn.
Second, as a follow-up to Dr. Werum’s presentation, the SISR, SSRC, and WIM will host a series of virtual panels on Friday, February 19th, from 2:00-3:30pm. These panels will feature current and former IU sociology graduate student recipients of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP) and Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (DDRIG). The panelists will discuss their experiences with these funding programs and will also field questions.
Graduate students interested in attending the virtual panels should first watch Dr. Werum’s recorded presentation, and then register to attend (via Zoom) at https://go.iu.edu/3yfo.
