CHARMIAN LAM
Charmian is a Ph.D student in the Educational Leadership Policy Studies Department at IU with a focus in Higher Education and Student Affairs. She is also pursuing minors in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education and Learning Sciences. Charmian holds a B.S. in anthropology and an M.S. in sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has five years of instructional experience in higher education as the instructor of First-year Composition, Introduction to Sociology, and courses for students on academic probation. Charmian also has experience as a pre-health academic advisor for students seeking to pursue a career in health professions. These occupational experiences serve as the foundation to Charmian’s research interests in student sense of belonging and retention, the scholarship of teaching and learning for writing-intensive courses, writer identities, and writing pedagogy. As part of her graduate work, Charmian has experience as a writing center tutor for multiple R1 universities, helping undergraduate and graduate students meet academic, professional, and grant-related writing goals.
